Overview of Budget Touch

Budget Touch is based on the "Envelope" model of budgeting. For each expense, you create an envelope to manage it. When you receive money you place it into envelopes so that you will have money for those expenses when you need it. When you make a purchase, you go to the envelope and record the expense. This process allows you to have a very real time view of the money you have available for any expense.

You can set a budgeted expense amount for each envelope so that you can quickly tell how you are doing. A graph is displayed on each envelope with a budgeted amount and shows the ratio of your envelope balance against the amount budgeted.

Budget Touch allows you to quickly record transactions as you make purchases. You can get reports on your spending and see graphs showing the amounts deposited, expenses entered, and the balance for any envelope.

Working with Budget Touch

After setting up your accounts and envelopes, you will mostly be creating transactions. Transactions are a record of your banking activity. When you write a check, you create a check transaction in Budget Touch. When you make a deposit at the bank you create a deposit transaction in Budget Touch. When you make a credit card purchase you record a charge transaction in Budget Touch, and so on.

To create transactions touch the account you want to use, then the envelope, then the Plus (+) button to get the transaction screen. Enter the information for the transaction and touch save. Or use "Express Transaction", touch and hold an existing transaction and touch Save to create a new one based on the existing one, great for entering common transactions.

Setting up pay sources and budgeted expenses with pay details allows you to automatically distribute predefined amounts to your envelopes when you create a pay deposit transaction. See the Pay Sources section for more details.

Pay sources and pay details are an additional add-on. See the Add-Ons section for more details.

There are 10 transaction types in Budget Touch: Check, Debit, ATM, Charge, Transfer (envelope), Account Transfer, Deposit, Refund (deposit to a credit card account), Credit Card Payment (account transfer), and Pay Entry. All transaction types can be split between envelopes except the envelope transfer type. See the Transactions section for more details.
